UIMSA CHAP World Heart Day’22
The University of Ibadan Medical Students' Association (UIMSA) Community Health Awareness Programme (CHAP) committee in this September held different activities to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVD). One was a vox pop where we went out to the street of Ibadan asking different people questions about their hearts and what they do to avoid cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and at the end of the question session, we were able to demystify different wrong notions concerning CVDs then we went on to give health educations on cardiovascular health. We had a fitness programme where we did the World Heart Day Challenge, a yoga, exercise and dance session. We then made a video where we gave health education on cardiovascular health.
Finally, on September 29, to mark World Heart Day, we had a medical outreach at the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan, a traditional monarch who we believed would motivate members of the community to take definite actions concerning their cardiovascular health. Although hampered by poor funding, we were able to attend to 122 people. The outreach included a health talk about cardiovascular diseases, free health checks (blood pressure checks, blood glucose checks, BMI measurements, visual acuity tests), and free medical consultations. Drugs were given for free to beneficiaries of the outreach who needed them.
