This is a statement delivered by the World Heart Federation at the WHO Executive Board Meeting (EB145) on Agenda Item 22: <\/span>Climate change, <\/span>pollution<\/span> and health.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n We applaud Member States for <\/span><\/span>addressing<\/span><\/span> climate change <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>urge this body to<\/span><\/span> take decisive action<\/span><\/span> through a strong, comprehensive resolution.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Climate change has a wide range of impacts on <\/span>health and <\/span>cardiovascular health<\/span> in particular<\/span>, from<\/span> direct exposure pathways such as <\/span>heat events and<\/span> air pollution to indirect knock-on effects. Climate change disproportionately affects susceptible populations<\/span>, including <\/span>people living with cardiopulmonary diseases. In 2019, <\/span>roughly 7<\/span> million deaths, or 12 percent of all deaths worldwide, were attributable to air pollution<\/span>,<\/span> with a<\/span>s many as half from heart disease and stroke.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Progress in turning recommendations into action has been slow. <\/span>9\/10<\/span> people worldwide <\/span>are<\/span> exposed to air pollution above WHO Air Quality Guidelines.<\/span> We encourage a WHA resolution on climate and health that embraces <\/span>win-win policies like active transportation<\/span>, commitments to phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and use, strengthening healthy cities, <\/span>and building resilient health systems <\/span>through<\/span> strong PHC coverage<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" This is a statement delivered by the World Heart Federation at the WHO Executive Board Meeting (EB145) on Agenda Item 22: Climate change, pollution and health.
