The World Heart Federation created the WHF Salim Yusuf Emerging Leaders Programme to form and develop a long-term cadre of experts who collaborate, research, and act to reduce premature mortality from cardiovascular disease globally. The Programme, designed by Dr Salim Yusuf in 2014, provides training and networking opportunities in cardiovascular health policy and implementation research for healthcare practitioners, researchers, and global health advocates.

Focusing on a different priority area each year, the objective of the training module is to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.4. Our 220-people-strong expert community has so far tackled a number of issues, including secondary prevention, tobacco control, access to essential medicines, diabetes, infectious diseases and digital health.

This year is the 10 year anniversary of the programme and will focus on fixed-dose combination therapies (FDCs) and cardiovascular disease and will be convened 27 October – 1 November in Mombasa, Kenya.

Alexander Perkins, United Kingdom/Canada Building on the growing success of the Salim Yusuf Emerging Leaders programme, WHF is creating a second capacity building module in leadership in cardiovascular health.

The 2024 Emerging Leaders cohort are:
