{"id":2382,"date":"2016-08-10T08:07:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-10T07:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/who-regional-meetings-overview\/"},"modified":"2023-01-12T15:37:18","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T14:37:18","slug":"who-regional-meetings-overview","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/who-regional-meetings-overview\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO Regional Meetings: Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Throughout the coming months, the World Heart Federation will be sending representatives to the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee Meetings, which are held to set regional policy and to approve budgets and programmes of work for each of the 6 WHO regions.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting annually from August \u2013 October, the six meetings each have a region-specific agenda, which address pressing health issues. NGOs attending the meetings \u2013 such as the WHF \u2013 are able to submit and deliver statements on these topics. The Regional Meetings also gather important health actors and decision-makers of one Region together at a time, presenting valuable opportunities for advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>A strong presence at the Regional Committee Meetings \u2013 through delegates from World Heart Federation staff and from around the world \u2013 will allow the WHF to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a strong advocacy presence across the meetings for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD)<\/li>\n<li>Receive updates from key WHO country offices and other stakeholders on the progress of CVD and RHD prevention and control in the Region<\/li>\n<li>Make statements during Agenda Items relevant to CVD,NCDs and RHD during the meetings, and influence the course of the discussions<\/li>\n<li>To offer our support and expertise to Member States<\/li>\n<li>Stay up-to-date with regional\u00a0 health priorities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 6 Regional Committee Meetings will be taking place in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/en\/sixty-sixth-session.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">African Regional Office (AFRO) <\/a>\u2013 19-23 August 2016, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.searo.who.int\/mediacentre\/events\/governance\/rc\/67session\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South-East Asian Regional Office (SEARO)<\/a> \u2013 5-9 September 2016, Colombo, Sri Lanka<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/en\/about-us\/governance\/regional-committee-for-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">European Regional Office (EURO)<\/a> \u2013 12-15 September 2016, Copenhagen, Denmark<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paho.org\/hq\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=category&amp;layout=blog&amp;id=1259&amp;Itemid=1159&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO)<\/a> \u2013 26-30 September 2016, Washington D.C., United States of America<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/about-who\/rc63\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO)<\/a> \u2013 3-6 October 2016, Cairo, Egypt<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpro.who.int\/about\/regional_committee\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">West Pacific Regional Office (WPRO)<\/a> \u2013 10-14 October 2016, Manila, Philippines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A key topic for discussion at the Regional Meetings this year will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/?menu=1300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sustainable Development Agenda<\/a>. The World Heart Federation will stress the importance of tackling CVDs and NCDs as Member States work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, set in September 2015 by the UN General Assembly.
