Held annually on 31 May, the day\u2019s key themes are to protect health, reduce poverty and promote development.<\/h2>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"post-2083 media-2083\" class=\"align-center center-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.world-heart-federation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Tobacco.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The event featured panelists from the governments of Panama, Italy and the Philippines, as well as from the Secretariats of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and WHO.<\/p>\n<p>Chandra Kishore Mishra \u2013 President of the Conference of the Parties to the WHO FCTC \u2013 underlined the threat tobacco consumption poses to sustainable development, noting its effect on lost productivity and contribution to deforestation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>H.E. Maurizio Enrico Serra, the Italian Ambassador to the UN, emphasized the potential of tobacco taxation to contribute to domestic resources, while Dr Maria Luisa Silva \u2013 from the UN Development Programme \u2013 warned of the need to protect against industry\u2019s \u2018predatory marketing strategies\u2019 in low- and lower middle-income countries.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><cite class=\"c-content__quote-citation\">Summarizing the goal of World No Tobacco Day, Dr Mishra concluded: \u2018it\u2019s about health, it\u2019s about economy, it\u2019s about prosperity\u2019.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization hosted a side event at the World Health Assembly on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.
