The meeting will be held next year in New York City.<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"post-2102 media-2102\" class=\"align-center break-container\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.world-heart-federation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Photo-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Describing NCDs as the &#8216;social justice issue of our time&#8217;, the statement underlined the key political and technical preparations necessary to make the meeting a success, including:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0 1. \u00a0Participation by heads of state and government<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0 2. \u00a0Political mobilization across health and relevant non-health sectors<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0 3. \u00a0Meaningful engagement of people living with NCDs and civil society<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0 4. \u00a0An action-oriented outcome document with bold commitments for all relevant sectors<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The statement also called for adequate financing for &#8216;chronically underfunded&#8217; NCDs, and noted the development opportunities offered by engagement with sectors such as education, energy and transport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>During Member State discussions on this issue, many countries &#8211; including Sri Lanka, Estonia and Liberia &#8211; called for greater action on the harmful use of alcohol, while the Philippines stated its intention to pursue regulatory reforms to increase action to tackle NCDs. The vast majority of Member States expressed strong support for preparations for HLM 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Following extensive parallel discussions on the <a href=\"https:\/\/who.int\/ncds\/governance\/appendix3-update\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated Appendix 3<\/a> \u2013 a list of cost-effective policy options to tackle NCDs \u2013 Member States passed the draft Resolution on this item.
