{"id":2916,"date":"2019-04-23T15:42:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T14:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/international-society-of-nephrology-shines-a-light-on-kidney-health-policy-in-asia-and-pacific\/"},"modified":"2021-04-30T19:18:14","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T18:18:14","slug":"international-society-of-nephrology-shines-a-light-on-kidney-health-policy-in-asia-and-pacific","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/international-society-of-nephrology-shines-a-light-on-kidney-health-policy-in-asia-and-pacific\/","title":{"rendered":"International Society of Nephrology shines a light on kidney health policy in Asia and Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Society of Nephrology (ISN), a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-heart-federation.org\/programmes\/global-coalition-circulatory-health\/\">Global Coalition for Circulatory Health<\/a>, held its biannual World Congress of Nephrology Forum in Melbourne \u2013 12 to 15 April 2019.\u00a0 The ISN Global Kidney Policy Forum, held on the Friday 13 April, focused on the quality, sustainability and equity of access to kidney care across Asia and Pacific regions.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theisn.org\/images\/ISN_advocacy\/UN_High_Level_Meeting_on_NCDs_2018_-_Toolkit\/UN_HLM_NCD_ISN_Pirority_briefing_June_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12 Steps to Comprehensive Kidney Disease Management<\/a>\u00a0that were agreed at the Congress in Mexico City in 2017, which targeted patient, health providers, health system and research changes, the Policy Forum concentrated on the opportunities and challenges faced by member countries in preventing, diagnosing and managing kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from Pacific Island countries, including Samoa, Fiji and New Caledonia presented their current experiences in managing kidney health.<\/p>\n<p>The consistent theme from \u2018low\u2019 to \u2018middle-incomed\u2019 countries was the need to have accessible, affordable and effective primary health care services to increase the focus on prevention, with obesity, hypertension diabetes significant health issues across the region.\u00a0 Furthermore, the other common themes were the importance of managing kidney health with the existence of co-morbidities, and the important synergies with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>Key directions from the Policy Forum for improving the management of kidney health was to re-focus from the provider to patient, hospital to patient and to seek to develop innovative methods to deliver both primary and secondary care services to high risk patients, many faced by geographic challenges.\u00a0 A change to prevention and care would need to extend to focus on risk factor management, in particular, the three areas of obesity, hypertension and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>The results from the second edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theisn.org\/focus\/ckd#health-atlas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Kidney Health Atlas<\/a> (GKHA) were presented at the Policy Forum.\u00a0 Based on survey results of 160 members (covering 98% of the world\u2019s population), the GKHA provides a comparative analysis and data synthesis about the trends on the burden of kidney disease and its consequences worldwide.
