It\u2019s a miracle that I\u2019m here and feeling so well.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW62775159 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2001,\u00a0while\u00a0I was at\u00a0work\u00a0I had a mild heart attack. They kept me in\u00a0the\u00a0hospital for a few days and\u00a0placed\u00a0two\u00a0stents\u00a0in my heart. A few years later I started to experience problems with my eyes,\u00a0and when I went to my doctor they asked if I had diabetes. They tested me and found out that I was pre-diabetic.\u00a0After my heart attack, a dietician\u00a0had\u00a0recommended that I eat around 45g of carbohydrate at every meal, but it turns out that this had accelerated by diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0this\u00a0point, I knew nothing about the link between heart disease and diabetes. I only found out about it four years ago through my own research and\u00a0I then discussed the connection between the two health issues with my cardiologist. This knowledge has made a huge difference to me, particularly as around the same time I found out that I had\u00a0the early stages of\u00a0kidney disease. Diabetes affects the heart, the kidneys, everything\u2026\u00a0they\u2019re all connected.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I feel amazingly well. But it\u2019s taken a long time to get here. In January I had a kidney transplant thanks to my son donating one of his kidneys. I\u00a0took part in the Suppers Program\u00a0which\u00a0helped teach\u00a0me how to cook for people\u00a0with\u00a0diabetes and\u00a0was\u00a0actually\u00a0a big part in\u00a0totally changing my eating patterns, and\u00a0has made the biggest difference to me. In my last blood\u00a0test,\u00a0my cardiologist was thrilled as every reading was within the normal range.\u00a0Also, my\u00a0A1C level\u00a0was\u00a05.2,\u00a0similar to\u00a0a person who doesn\u2019t have diabetes!\u00a0These improvements have enabled me to reduce the medications I have been taking.<\/p>\n<p>For the last five years, I have been proud to be part of DiabetesSisters, an organization that\u2019s in half of the states\u00a0in the\u00a0US\u00a0and growing\u00a0steadily.\u00a0We\u2019re a peer\u00a0support\u00a0group that\u2019s free\u00a0for anyone with any type of diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>As part of\u00a0DiabetesSisters\u00a0and as co-leader of a local chapter of the\u00a0organization, I\u00a0am\u00a0happy to share my experiences and\u00a0help inspire people with CVD and diabetes to make those lifestyle changes that can make all the difference.<\/p>\n<p>My promise for World Heart Day is to stay focused on taking care of my health and to ensure that I\u2019m around to have a good, long and happy life\u00a0with my family and friends.
