{"id":2985,"date":"2019-10-30T13:46:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T13:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/public-health-groups-call-on-international-labour-organization-to-reject-tobacco-funding\/"},"modified":"2021-04-30T19:19:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T18:19:00","slug":"public-health-groups-call-on-international-labour-organization-to-reject-tobacco-funding","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/public-health-groups-call-on-international-labour-organization-to-reject-tobacco-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Public health groups call on International Labour Organization to reject tobacco funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bangkok (30 October, 2019)\u00a0\u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Global public health groups called on the ILO Governing Body to reject tobacco donations and tap tobacco taxes as funding source; as well as to espouse strict regulations on labor standards in order to eliminate concerns such as hazardous working conditions and child labor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ggtc.world\/2019\/10\/30\/an-open-letter-to-the-ilo\/\">The letter<\/a> addressed to the \u201cDirector General of the ILO and the Government Members\u201d who are currently in Geneva for the 337<sup>th<\/sup> Session of the Governing Body; reveals that British American Tobacco, Japan Tobacco International, and Philip Morris International, had granted, in a span of a decade until 2018,\u00a0 about 15 million US dollars to the International Labor Organization (ILO) as part of a global effort to rehabilitate their image. And that the cost of the companies\u2019 deadly products to society in that period is 12 Trillion US dollars. In the letter, tobacco companies are called out for \u201cdiverting attention from the fact that tobacco production and consumption hinders progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); claiming, on an annual basis, 8 million lives, and leaving behind a devastating trail of social, economic, environmental and health harms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working documents of the ILO meeting also reveal that during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---ed_dialogue\/---sector\/documents\/meetingdocument\/wcms_717011.pdf\">working group meeting<\/a> in Kampala in July, the Employers Sector\u2019s, representing industry interests, continued lobby for the ILO to \u201cclosely engage and cooperate with the\u2026 industry\u201d to which the Workers Sector did not consent to. The ILO Governing Body, which decided not to renew past contracts with the tobacco industry, is now tasked\u00a0 to consider a \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---ed_norm\/---relconf\/documents\/meetingdocument\/wcms_723941.pdf\">3-year strategy costed at US$1.67M<\/a> to be funded from multi and bilateral aid for development cooperation, prioritizing Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Civil society supports the ILO\u2019s proposal to exclude tobacco funding from its strategy to address tobacco labor issues because \u201cILO must not be complicit in tobacco industry\u2019s marketing strategies\u201d and\u00a0 \u201cpersistent poor working environment and unfair bargaining conditions of tobacco workers, that leads to child labor; can be traced back to the multinational tobacco companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In August, amid the controversy surrounding an outgoing high level UN official\u2019s promotion of tobacco partnerships, the UN Secretary General issued a memo to the officials of the UN system encouraging them to adopt the \u201cModel policy for agencies of the United Nations system on preventing tobacco industry interference\u201d and reject tobacco funding and partnerships. \u00a0In October last year, the governing body of another treaty, the World Health Organization\u2019s Framework Convention on Tobacco control called on governments \u201cto promote tobacco control policy coherence in the governing bodies of the relevant intergovernmental organizations, including ILO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The health groups comprise of organizations working on global health issues including coalitions serving around 400 civil society organizations across 150 countries. The organizations signing the letter, led by STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products), include <em>Action for Smoking and Health, US, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Corporate Accountability International Framework Convention Alliance, Johns Hopkins Institute for Global Tobacco Control, NCD Alliance, and World Heart Federation.<\/em><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bangkok (30 October, 2019)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Global public health groups called on the ILO Governing Body to reject tobacco donations and tap tobacco taxes as funding source; as well as to espouse strict regulations on labor standards in order to eliminate concerns such as hazardous working conditions and child labor.
