{"id":3013,"date":"2020-02-11T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/ncd-alliance-and-bbc-storyworks-launch-new-short-documentary-series-turning-the-tide\/"},"modified":"2023-05-05T12:21:20","modified_gmt":"2023-05-05T10:21:20","slug":"ncd-alliance-and-bbc-storyworks-launch-new-short-documentary-series-turning-the-tide","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/ncd-alliance-and-bbc-storyworks-launch-new-short-documentary-series-turning-the-tide\/","title":{"rendered":"NCD Alliance and BBC StoryWorks launch new short documentary series \u201cTurning the Tide\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>26 films from 24 countries depict the global struggle of affected communities against the NCD epidemic<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Tuesday 11 February 2020 (Sharjah UAE).<\/strong> &#8211;The series of short documentaries, launched today at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ncdalliance.org\/NCDAF2020\">Global NCD Alliance Forum<\/a> taking place in Sharjah (which can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdalliance.org\/turning-the-tide\">here<\/a>) aims to give voice to the global burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), examining the much-needed work of institutions and communities across the globe which seek to make prevention and control a priority.<\/p>\n<p>The series contains 26 short films depicting the impact of the NCD epidemic across the globe that amongst others includes a focus on diabetes in Mexico, mental health in South Africa, stroke in Romania, hypertension in Myanmar and psoriasis in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>NCDs \u2013 mainly cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes \u2013 are the most common cause of death and disability worldwide, accounting for 70 percent of all deaths and more than three out of four years lived with a disability. Yet much of the suffering caused by these diseases is preventable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a pressing need to tell of the challenge and impact of NCDs through the lens of human stories. This series of short films goes beyond the numbers and statistics and puts a human face to these diseases, relaying the everyday reality of living with or caring for people with NCDs in low- and middle-income countries. They also highlight the power of community action, resilience and agency, by shining a spotlight on the change agents who are making a difference to turn the tide on NCDs\u201d, said Katie Dain, CEO of the NCD Alliance<\/p>\n<p>A collaboration across public, private and non-profit health and development sectors, the ambitious project represents a great diversity of voices from around the world.
