She has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Professor_(highest_academic_rank)\">Professor<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerontology\">Clinical Gerontology<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Cambridge\">University of Cambridge<\/a>\u00a0since 1989 and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fellow_(Oxbridge)\">Fellow<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gonville_and_Caius_College,_Cambridge\">Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge<\/a>\u00a0since 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Khaw was born on 14 October 1950 to Khaw Kai Boh and Tan Chwee Geok.\u00a0She studied medicine at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Girton_College,_Cambridge\">Girton College, Cambridge<\/a>, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree; as per tradition, her BA was later promoted to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Master_of_Arts_(Oxbridge_and_Dublin)\">Master of Arts<\/a>\u00a0(MA Cantab) degree.\u00a0She continued her medical studies at Cambridge and at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Mary%27s_Hospital_Medical_School\">St Mary&#8217;s Hospital Medical School<\/a>, graduating with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bachelor_of_Medicine,_Bachelor_of_Surgery\">Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery<\/a>\u00a0(MB BChir) degrees.\u00a0She studied\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epidemiology\">epidemiology<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London_School_of_Hygiene_and_Tropical_Medicine\">London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine<\/a>, graduating with a Master of Science (MSc) degree.<\/p>\n<p>From 1979 to 1984, Khaw held a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wellcome_Trust_Research_Fellowship\">Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship<\/a>, and worked at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/London_School_of_Hygiene_and_Tropical_Medicine\">London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_Mary%27s_Hospital,_London\">St Mary&#8217;s Hospital, London<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_California,_San_Diego\">University of California, San Diego<\/a>. In 1985, she was an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adjunct_professor\">adjunct<\/a>\u00a0assistant professor at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UC_San_Diego_School_of_Medicine\">UC San Diego School of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Khaw then returned to England, where she was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senior_registrar\">senior registrar<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Community_medicine\">community medicine<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/School_of_Clinical_Medicine,_University_of_Cambridge\">School of Clinical Medicine, University of Cambridge<\/a>, between 1986 and 1989.\u00a0In 1989, she was appointed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Professor_(highest_academic_rank)\">Professor<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerontology\">Clinical Gerontology<\/a>.\u00a0In 1991, she was also elected a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fellow_(Oxbridge)\">Fellow<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gonville_and_Caius_College,_Cambridge\">Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge<\/a>: since 2015, she has been a Jeffrey Cheah Professorial Fellow at the college.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The World Heart Awards are all about celebrating new ideas and recognising the talents and achievements of those working to combat cardiovascular disease around the world.
