Prof Nishtar is the current Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety to the\u00a0Prime Minister of Pakistan, with the status of\u00a0Federal Minister, and\u00a0BISP Chairperson. Previously she served in the Interim Federal Cabinet\u00a0in\u00a02013\u00a0overseeing\u00a0public health, education and science.<\/p>\n<p>Nishtar co-chaired\u00a0WHO\u2019s High-Level Commission on Non-communicable diseases along with the Presidents of\u00a0Uruguay,\u00a0Finland\u00a0and\u00a0Sri Lanka.\u00a0She is a member of the\u00a0World Economic Forum\u2019s Global Agenda Council on the future of healthcare\u00a0and co-chairs the\u00a0U.S National Academy of Sciences\u00a0Global Study on the Quality of Healthcare in low and middle-income countries.\u00a0In addition, she also chairs the United Nations International Institute for Global Health&#8217;s International Advisory Board\u00a0and a member of the International Advisory Board on Global Health of the\u00a0German Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>Born in\u00a0Peshawar, Nishtar went to medical school at\u00a0Khyber Medical College\u00a0and graduated top of her class in 1986.\u00a0She was inducted into the\u00a0College of Physicians &amp; Surgeons of Pakistan\u00a0in 1991 after completing her residency at\u00a0Khyber Teaching Hospital. She joined the\u00a0Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences\u00a0as a cardiologist in 1994 and worked with the institute until 2007. She left the institute on\u00a0sabbatical\u00a0twice, first in 1996 to at the\u00a0Guy&#8217;s Hospital\u00a0in\u00a0London, and again in 1999 to pursue her\u00a0Ph.D\u00a0in\u00a0Medicine\u00a0from the\u00a0King&#8217;s College London, which she received in 2002.\u00a0She became a fellow of\u00a0Royal College of Physicians\u00a0in 2005.\u00a0In 2019, Kings College London awarded her a Doctorate in Science, Honoris Causa.<\/p>\n<p>In 1998, Nishtar founded Heartfile, an\u00a0Islamabad-based\u00a0health policy\u00a0think tank.Since 2014, Nishtar has been a Co-Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Health_Organization\">WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity<\/a>\u00a0and also serves on the board of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UN_University\">United Nations University&#8217;s Institute for Global Health<\/a>. Nishtar was a leading candidate for Director-General of the World Health Organization, to be elected in May 2017. She was amongst the shortlisted three nominees in the election held in January 2017, but was not successful in the final election held on 23 May 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sania Nishtar is the granddaughter of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sardar_Abdur_Rab_Nishtar\">Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar<\/a>, a leading figure in the Pakistan movement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The World Heart Awards are all ab<\/strong><strong>out celebrating new ideas and recognising the talents and achievements of those working to combat cardiovascular disease around the world.
