{"id":3143,"date":"2021-01-21T17:16:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-21T16:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/whf-welcomes-whos-resolution-on-oral-health-at-eb148\/"},"modified":"2021-05-24T12:52:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T10:52:00","slug":"whf-welcomes-whos-resolution-on-oral-health-at-eb148","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/whf-welcomes-whos-resolution-on-oral-health-at-eb148\/","title":{"rendered":"WHF welcomes WHO&#8217;s resolution on Oral Health at #EB148"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>This is a statement made at the 148th session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/about\/governance\/executive-board\/executive-board-148th-session\">WHO Executive Board<\/a> on Agenda Item\u00a06: <em>Political declaration of the third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases<\/em> by the World Heart Federation and members of the Global Coalition.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">Honourable chair, distinguished delegates,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Members of the Global Coalition for Circulatory Health, the World Heart Federation,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">International Diabetes Federation, International Society for Nephrology, and World Stroke Organization thank you for the opportunity to make this statement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Global Coalition for Circulatory Health brings together international, regional and national stakeholders in circulatory health to drive the urgent action needed to combat heart disease<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stroke<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">kidney disease\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and diabetes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the world\u2019s greatest killers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yet we do not seek to tackle\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">these problems in isolation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">studies have shown that o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ral\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and circulatory\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">health\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are connected, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people who have poor oral health (such as gum disease or tooth loss) have higher rates of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack or stroke.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he spread of bacteria from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0mouth to other parts of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0body through the bloodstream<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can result in illnesses such as endocarditis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0other cardiovascular conditions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0such as atherosclerosis and stroke<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have also been linked to inflammation caused by oral bacteria.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In addition, people with diabetes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are at increased risk of poor oral health as a consequence of a higher concentration of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0glucose in their saliva<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0many circulatory diseases may lead to disabilities that impair the possibility to maintain\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">good\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oral health<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">therefore\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">welcome the Director-General\u2019s report and thank Member States for the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0proposed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0resolution on oral health.
