Political declaration of the third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases<\/em> by the World Heart Federation and members of the Global Coalition.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/b><\/p>\nHonourable chair, distinguished delegates,<\/span><\/p>\nAs Members of the Global Coalition for Circulatory Health, the World Heart Federation,\u00a0<\/span>International Diabetes Federation, International Society for Nephrology, and World Stroke Organization thank you for the opportunity to make this statement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe Global Coalition for Circulatory Health brings together international, regional and national stakeholders in circulatory health to drive the urgent action needed to combat heart disease<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>stroke<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>kidney disease\u00a0<\/span>and diabetes<\/span>, the world\u2019s greatest killers.\u00a0<\/span>Yet we do not seek to tackle\u00a0<\/span>these problems in isolation<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>studies have shown that o<\/span>ral\u00a0<\/span>and circulatory\u00a0<\/span>health\u00a0<\/span>are connected, and\u00a0<\/span>people who have poor oral health (such as gum disease or tooth loss) have higher rates of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack or stroke.<\/span>\u00a0T<\/span>he spread of bacteria from\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0mouth to other parts of<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0body through the bloodstream<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can result in illnesses such as endocarditis<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0other cardiovascular conditions<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0such as atherosclerosis and stroke<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0have also been linked to inflammation caused by oral bacteria.<\/span>\u00a0In addition, people with diabetes\u00a0<\/span>are at increased risk of poor oral health as a consequence of a higher concentration of<\/span>\u00a0glucose in their saliva<\/span>, and<\/span>\u00a0many circulatory diseases may lead to disabilities that impair the possibility to maintain\u00a0<\/span>good\u00a0<\/span>oral health<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nWe\u00a0<\/span>therefore\u00a0<\/span>welcome the Director-General\u2019s report and thank Member States for the<\/span>\u00a0proposed<\/span>\u00a0resolution on oral health.
