{"id":8767,"date":"2016-11-04T01:18:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-04T00:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/hundreds-of-children-screened-for-rhd-in-egypt-on-the-occasion-of-world-heart-day\/"},"modified":"2016-11-04T01:18:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-04T00:18:00","slug":"hundreds-of-children-screened-for-rhd-in-egypt-on-the-occasion-of-world-heart-day","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/news\/hundreds-of-children-screened-for-rhd-in-egypt-on-the-occasion-of-world-heart-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of children screened for RHD in Egypt on the occasion of World Heart Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To mark <a href=\"http:\/\/worldheartday.org\/\">World Heart Day<\/a>, over two hundred children and adults were screened for rheumatic heart disease in Asmarat, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>The echocardiography screenings formed part of Egypt\u2019s Rheumatic Fever \/ Rheumatic Heart Disease (RF\/RHD) Prevention and Control Programme, and marked the beginning of efforts to screen schoolchildren for RHD throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>One of the doctors involved in the screening, Dr Amany Atef Galal, commented: &#8220;We hope to eliminate and get rid of the term RHD&#8221;. The screenings provoked a lot of media interest, and were attended by representatives from the World Heart Federation Advocacy team and the Faculty of Medicine of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asu.edu.eg\/\">Ain Shams University<\/a> Cairo, as well as Dr Alaa El Ghamrawy, Director of the national RF\/RHD Prevention and Control Programme.<\/p>\n<p>Following the screening, children took part in a range of activities to encourage physical activity, led by local organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/469167656436896\/\">Sofra<\/a>, and were treated to a football match between two local teams. All children received a pack at the end of the day for their participation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Programme Director Dr Alaa El Ghamrawy and participants during the day\u2019s activities<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>RHD prevention and control in Egypt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Egypt\u2019s RF\/RHD Prevention and Control Programme was established in 2002 and is fully integrated into the Egyptian Ministry of Health\u2019s programme on non-communicable diseases.<\/p>\n<p>In the first centre to be established as part of the programme \u2013 located in El Mahalla El Kubra, a city in northern Egypt \u2013 cardiologists and nurses have screened almost 10,000 patients for RHD since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Dr El Ghamrawy explained the programme\u2019s referral process: \u201cHospitals located in El Mahalla El Kubra and the 54 primary health care centres in surrounding rural areas refer patients to the RHD centre in El Mahalla, while those in need of heart surgery are referred to the nearby cardiac centre.\u201d He added that all patients who are treated in the clinic are given a follow up card, and that the programme maintains a digital registry of patients diagnosed with RF, RHD or rheumatic arthritis.<\/p>\n<p>You can read more about RHD prevention and control in Egypt in publications written or co-written by the World Heart Federation; the <a href=\"http:\/\/rhdaction.org\/sites\/default\/files\/RHD%20Global%20Status%20Report%202015-17.pdf\">RHD Action Global Status Report<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/rhdaction.org\/sites\/default\/files\/TIPS-HANDBOOK_World-Heart-Federation_RhEACH.pdf\">TIPS Handbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>People screened for RHD at the RHD Prevention and Control Centre in El Mahalla El Kubra, Egypt<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To mark World Heart Day, over two hundred children and adults were screened for rheumatic heart disease in Asmarat, a suburb of Cairo, Egypt.
