This is a statement made at the 72nd<\/strong>\u00a0Session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific Region<\/strong> on the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Honourable\u00a0Chair,\u00a0distinguished\u00a0delegates,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0World\u00a0Heart\u00a0Federation\u00a0thanks\u00a0you for this opportunity to address the\u00a0Regional Committee\u00a0on one of the most critical subjects of our time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken an\u00a0incalculable toll\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0mental\u00a0and physical health\u00a0of\u00a0our\u00a0societies; the fiscus has been negatively impacted and will take many years to recover.\u00a0This past year has united us in facing a truly global challenge,\u00a0but\u00a0it has\u00a0also\u00a0exposed deep, enduring fault lines and inequities in\u00a0the\u00a0population health and\u00a0health systems\u00a0of\u00a0nearly every country\u00a0represented here today.\u00a0The\u00a0WHO\u2019s pulse surveys have demonstrated that essential services for NCDs and mental health have been heavily disrupted in almost every\u00a0Member State, but only\u00a0eighteen of these\u00a0have reported\u00a0that NCDs are included in national preparedness and response plans.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the\u00a0chief representatives of the global cardiovascular\u00a0health community\u00a0and patients, we\u00a0at the WHF\u00a0have a\u00a0unique responsibility to draw your attention to the tsunami of post-pandemic\u00a0consequences\u00a0lying\u00a0in wait.\u00a0The combined impacts of cardiac complications due to COVID-19 and interruptions to crucial medical interventions and ongoing care for people living with\u00a0hypertension,\u00a0diabetes, kidney disease,\u00a0stroke,\u00a0and other circulatory\u00a0and non-communicable disease\u00a0conditions\u00a0(NCDs)\u2013 those most\u00a0at risk of poor outcomes from COVID-19 \u2013\u00a0will almost certainly exacerbate the\u00a0already huge burden borne\u00a0by stressed\u00a0and often ill-equipped\u00a0health systems\u00a0with gaps in human resources.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We therefore implore you\u00a0to\u00a0urgently address the\u00a0key\u00a0risk factors and preventative measures that can help\u00a0fight\u00a0the hidden\u00a0\u201csyndemic\u201d\u00a0of\u00a0NCDs,\u00a0and especially circulatory,\u00a0diseases\u00a0and\u00a0health emergencies such as\u00a0COVID-19.\u00a0We call on\u00a0Western Pacific\u00a0Member States to:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
