Today the World Health Organization (WHO) published the six modules that make up the HEARTS technical package, a WHF-supported initiative which provides a strategic approach to improving cardiovascular health at the national level. More people die from cardiovascular diseases than from any other cause, and over three-quarters of heart disease and stroke related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. The package was created to support policy makers and programme managers working in resource limited settings who can influence CVD primary care delivery in their countries.
The HEARTS technical package is part of the broader Global Hearts Initiative, which includes two other packages that address the prevention of CVDs. The development of the HEARTS modules was led by WHO and the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention, with the support of 9 civil society organizations, including the World Heart Federation and our members the American Heart Association and the World Stroke Organization. Global Coalition for Circulatory Health members the International Society of Hypertension, the International Society of Nephrology and the World Hypertension League were also involved in the project.
