From Caregiver to Changemaker, Health Beyond Borders across rural India particularly Telangana: Narsimha Raju Dichpally’s Fight Against Diabetes and NCDs, Work on CVD Awareness

My father, Pentaiah Dichpally, has lived with type 2 diabetes for over 25 years. I was still in university when he was diagnosed, and I became his caregiver—accompanying him to doctor visits, learning to administer medicines, and supporting his lifestyle changes. In the early days, insulin injections were difficult due to the lack of disposable syringes. Thankfully, he now manages his condition with oral medications like Glipizide and Metformin.
A lifelong social worker and senior member of Lions Clubs International, my father has led health initiatives across communities. Inspired by him, I’ve joined his mission to organize diabetes screening camps, especially in rural areas. We’ve established 25 permanent centers offering free screenings, subsidized medicines, and donated supplies. I personally contribute testing strips and mobilize support from generous colleagues.
I too live with type 2 diabetes and understand the stigma and fear many in India associate with the disease. I’ve seen relatives suffer amputations due to poor awareness and access. Our camps aim to change attitudes and provide life-saving education.
Our focus has expanded to cardiovascular disease (CVD), another major NCD. My father suffered a CVD episode during travel, and a close friend—young and disciplined—recently had a cardiac arrest and now requires heart surgery. These experiences have deepened our commitment.
For over a decade, I’ve volunteered in multi-specialty camps offering free 2D Echo and ECG screenings. We’ve reached thousands across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, including a major World Heart Day event in Vizag.
Despite working full-time as an HR and IT Manager, I dedicate my spare time to advocacy. My father and I motivate each other daily—not just as family, but as partners in health. Together, we strive to make NCD care accessible, affordable, and empowering for all.
