Fontaine CELESTE

Located in Place des Cocotiers in central Nouméa, Fontaine Céleste is one of New Caledonia’s iconic landmarks. Inaugurated in 1893 and created by sculptor Paul Mahoux, the stone fountain stands eight metres tall. It takes its name from Céleste Benyamina, who modelled for the female statue at its summit. Protected as a historic monument since 1992, it also marks the reference point from which road distances in New Caledonia are measured.
