WORLD HEART DAY 2026

Theme: “Don’t Miss a Beat”

Date: 29th September 2026

Organized by: RV College of Nursing

Venue: RV Institute of Management and RV University – Allied Health Sciences

INTRODUCTION

World Heart Day is observed annually on 29th September to create awareness about cardiovascular health and the importance of timely intervention during cardiac emergencies. In connection with World Heart Day 2026, with the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat,” RV College of Nursing organized a Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS) Awareness and Training Programme for students of RV Institute of Management and RV University – Allied Health Sciences.

OBJECTIVES

The programme was organized with the following objectives:

To create awareness regarding cardiac arrest and other cardiac emergencies.

To emphasize the importance of early recognition and immediate response during cardiac arrest.

To provide students with knowledge regarding high-quality chest compressions.

To familiarize students with the use and importance of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

To develop confidence among students to initiate appropriate basic life support measures during an emergency.

To highlight the importance of timely intervention in improving outcomes following cardiac arrest.

PROGRAMME DETAILS

The programme focused on essential aspects of Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BCLS). Approximately 160 students from RV Institute of Management and RV University – Allied Health Sciences participated in the awareness and training programme.

The session included an overview of cardiac arrest, its recognition, and the importance of immediate intervention. Students were oriented regarding the appropriate response to a cardiac emergency, including activation of the emergency response system, initiation of chest compressions, and the role of defibrillation.

A practical demonstration and hands-on training session were conducted to help students understand the correct technique of chest compressions and the basic steps involved in providing BCLS. The students actively participated in the hands-on training and gained practical exposure to performing chest compressions. The importance of prompt action and effective coordination during a cardiac emergency was also emphasized.

OUTCOME

The programme successfully created awareness among approximately 160 students regarding the recognition and immediate management of cardiac arrest. The participants gained an understanding of the importance of early intervention, chest compressions, and defibrillation in a cardiac emergency.

The hands-on training provided an opportunity for the students to develop confidence in performing basic life support measures and responding appropriately during a cardiac emergency.

The programme also emphasized that every second matters during cardiac arrest, and timely action by a bystander can play an important role while awaiting advanced medical assistance.

CONCLUSION

The World Heart Day 2026 BCLS Awareness and Training Programme was successfully conducted in alignment with the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat.” The programme served as an effective platform to promote awareness about cardiac emergencies and equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills related to Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support.

The participation of approximately 160 students contributed to spreading awareness about the importance of immediate response to cardiac arrest and the need for a community that is prepared to act during cardiac emergencies.
