Motivation

I am honoured to be nominated for a second term as a Member at Large of the Board of the World Heart Federation (WHF). My personal leadership purpose is to “thrive by inspiring others,” reflecting how I approach service, collaboration and leadership.

My vision for the WHF is of a truly global Federation that is vibrant, connected and visible. I believe the WHF should bring together people and organisations from every region not simply as members, but as active participants in a shared movement to improve cardiovascular health.

I would like to see an organisational culture that fosters engagement and creates opportunities for all members, people with lived experience, clinicians, researchers and policymakers to contribute. I will also support the WHF through its important role as a strong and visible advocate with a united global voice to influence policy, reduce inequities and ensure cardiovascular disease remains a priority on the international health agenda.

My reason for nominating is simple: I feel a deep connection to the WHF and its vision of cardiovascular health for everyone. “Hand on heart,” if elected, I will continue to dedicate my time, energy and passion to this purpose. I care about people, our global cardiovascular community and the difference we can make together. I would be honoured to represent WHF members by being hardworking, collegial and empathetic; while fostering open and honest collaboration.

I am a Professor of Public Health, physiotherapist and researcher based in Queensland, Australia. My career began as a physiotherapist in cardiology at a public hospital in Sydney, an experience that transformed my professional direction. For more than 20 years, I have worked to improve cardiovascular health through patient-centred prevention, health system reform, innovation and equity.

I have led international research and implementation programs, published more than 320 papers, led over 20 major projects and mentored hundreds of clinicians, researchers and people with lived experience. These experiences have taught me the importance of listening, building partnerships across disciplines and countries, and translating evidence into practical change.

My connection with the WHF began in 2015 as an Emerging Leader. Since then, I have contributed to World Congresses of Cardiology, Digital Health Roadmap, Science Committee and, most recently, chaired the Cardiac Rehabilitation Roadmap, promoting a renewed focus on lifelong cardiovascular health. In 2023, I had the privilege of leading the WHF Emerging Leaders Program in Sydney to support our next generation of leaders.

I bring experience in governance, strategy, research, implementation and capacity building. I have completed leadership training at Oxford University and through the Australian Institute for Company Directors. I have served on the Board of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand for six years and contribute to its science, clinical trials and education activities.

If elected, I will bring energy, passion, care and an open and collaborative approach to the Board. I will listen, communicate openly and work with all members globally to help build a WHF that is inclusive, engaged, influential and united in advancing cardiovascular health for everyone.
