Following the adoption of our new Policies and Procedures on Committees and Expert groups (Section III) by the Board on 15 September 2022, we are pleased to announce that the mandates for all Committees and Expert Groups will now be aligned with the Board mandates, starting 1 January 2023, for two years, renewable once:
The Science Committee (SC)
The Advocacy Committee (AC)
Neglected CVD EG (NCVDEG) reporting to SC
Observatory EG (OBSEG) reporting to SC
Fixed-Dose Combinations EG (FDCEG) reporting to SC
Air Pollution and Climate Change EG (APCCEG) reporting to AC
Tobacco EG reporting to AC
We are calling for nominations for both Committees and Expert Groups with the aim to engage better with our Members and strengthen our work in advocacy and science. If you are interested or would like to nominate a person to join one of the Committees or Expert Groups, please fill in the online Application form with a short CV and a short Personal Statement. Nominations should be submitted by 31 October 2022.
Please find below a short description of each committee. For more information, please read WHF Procedures and Policies and information about the Committees and Expert Groups.
The Committees and Expert Groups shall meet four times a year, once in person in Geneva during the WHF World Heart Summit in May and three times via 2-hours teleconference. Members might be involved in specific tasks such as writing groups.
Science Committee
The Science Committee (SC) is the cardiovascular health and policy evidence-based advisory committee for the WHF. The main responsibilities of the SC are to:
- Supervise the organization and planning of the WHF Roadmaps and Emerging Leaders programme as agreed by the Board;
- Manage the process of commissioning, reviewing and recommending to the Board the approval of appropriate medical and scientific statements and guidelines of importance, provide input and comments on the Position and policy papers prepared by the Advocacy Committee;
- Monitor new developments in cardiovascular science to determine and adjust the WHF scientific agenda appropriately.
The SC is composed of a Chair supported by the WHF office, and a maximum of 8 permanent members, including the Chair and the Programme Leaders responsible for specific programmes, representing different geographic regions and skills.
Advocacy Committee
The Advocacy Committee (AC) is the advisory committee for WHF for all issues related to Global Advocacy and Policy. The Committee should cover the broad needs in cardiovascular prevention, risk factors, diagnosis, management, and access to care.
The main responsibilities of the AC are to:
- Ensure that evidence-based medical and scientific knowledge underlies WHF’s advocacy efforts;
- Provide strategic input into the WHF strategic planning process and advise the Board of any conflicts between the advocacy policy of WHF and any of its Members.
Applications from civil society and foundation representatives are highly encouraged.
The AC is composed of a Chair supported by the WHF office, and a maximum of 8 permanent members, including the Chair. Criteria for membership should be based on advocacy expertise and competencies, taking into account geographic and gender diversity, in particular, to ensure adequate liaison with the 6 WHO regions.
The advocacy experts will: attend the WHO regional meetings; be aware of the discussions going on; read relevant WHO documents and reports; and participate in the writing of WHF position papers, responses to consultations and statements. They should also report on WHO global and regional activities to the AC.
Air Pollution and Climate Change Expert Group
The APCCEG guides the work of WHF in the area of air pollution, climate change, and CVD, identifying areas for further research and prioritizing key advocacy objectives.
Tobacco Expert Group
The TEG guides the work of WHF in the area of tobacco, identifying areas for further research and policies, and prioritizing key advocacy objectives on global tobacco control.
Neglected CVD Expert Group
The NCVDEG guides the work of WHF in the area of neglected CVD, in particular rheumatic heart disease and Chagas disease.
Observatory Expert Group
The OBSEG guides the work of WHF in the area of global CVD data collation and the development of the World Heart Observatory website and the publications of scientific papers and reports.
Fixed-Dose Combinations Expert Group
The FDCEG should lead in developing the necessary policy and implementation tools supported by the scientific evidence from the academic and research community, support WHF in moving this agenda forward and support the adoption of FDC at a larger scale.
