Dr Mariell Jessop was presented with the joint ESC-WHF Award for Outstanding Contribution to Global Cardiovascular Health, today at the opening of ESC Congress 2019 together with the World Congress of Cardiology, for the outstanding achievements during her distinguished career, especially for her volunteer service at AHA and for her international renown as a thought leader in heart failure research, prevention and research.
Dr Jessup is the Chief Science and Medical Officer of the American Heart Association. She is internationally renowned as a thought leader in heart failure research, prevention and treatment. Her sterling efforts have played a major role in heart failure and transplant cardiology becoming a certified secondary subspecialty in 2004. Over her distinguished career, her tireless work and compassion as a physician scientist and mentor has not only touched the lives of many patients and their families, but she has inspired and motivated many young professionals.
Dr Jessup’s focus throughout her career has been on the optimal management of patients with heart failure, including the appropriate selection of patients for heart transplant or ventricular assist devices (VADs). As medical director of the Penn Medicine Heart and Vascular Center, she worked with a multi-disciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiac and vascular surgeons, nurse practitioners, and nurses to deliver collaborative, cutting-edge care to heart patients.
For more than 24 years of volunteer service to the AHA, Dr Jessup has served in many notable roles, including as Chair of the ACC/AHA Heart Failure guidelines in 2009. She was the 2013-14 President of the Association and received its highest honor, the Gold Heart Award, in June 2018.
