World Heart Day-September 2022 and Health Assessment Camp by Department of Physiology, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur- Pakistan

The ‘Physiology Students Club’ working under the auspices of the Department of Physiology, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB), Pakistan celebrated the World Heart Day, September 29th, 2022 by organizing an Awareness Session & a General Health Assessment Camp (for assessment of BP, BMI and blood glucose level). The session was attended by various cardiologists and physiologists from IUB, Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH), and Qaid e Azam Medical College (QAMC), Bahawalpur, Pakistan. The audience of the session included faculty and students from various departments of the IUB.
The chairman of the department Prof. Dr. Umer Farooq highlighted the importance of this day as an annual observance as depicted by the World Heart Federation (WHF) and the UNO. He explained the stark challenge of high mortality in Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) especially in the low and middle-income countries. He also endorsed the aim of WHF and the UNO to reduce global mortality by 25%.
Prof. Dr. Sohail Atta (HOD Physiology, QAMC) explained the physiological aspects of heart and reiterated that this organ which is the first to be formed in a developing embryo needs highest level of critical care for its healthy functioning.
Dr. Nauman Ali (Consultant Cardiologist, BVH) explained how our lifestyles could easily alter our lives in general, and our heart’s health in specific. The audience took deep interest in the talks of both the guest speakers which was indicated through an intensive Q&A session.
The In-charge Students Affairs (Dr. Musadiq Idris and Dr. Aisha Mahmood) along with In-charge Medical Unit of the department (Dr. Haroon Rashid) were highly lauded by all for organizing such a beneficial session.
The session ended with a sum-up and future recommendations provided by Dr. Zia-Ur-Rehman (Associate Professor Physiology). He reiterated that a digital roadmap towards decreased global impact of CVDs is inevitable for Pakistan as recommended by the WHF and UNO.
