The International Diabetes Federation (IDF), a member of the Global Coalition for Circulatory Health, has launched a multi-country study on cardiovascular disease (CVD) awareness and knowledge in people with type 2 diabetes.
Globally, CVD is the most common cause of death in people with type 2 diabetes, and people with diabetes are 2 to 3 times more likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease. Many people with diabetes do not fully understand what constitutes CVD, or that they are at disproportionate risk.
The IDF initiative, aptly named Taking Diabetes to Heart, aims to change this. The online survey was launched on World Heart Day 2017 in multiple languages (including English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, German, Danish, Indonesian, Greek, Macedonian, Finnish, Swahili, Urdu, Vietnamese). The preliminary results of the study, presented at the IDF Congress 2017, can be viewed here.
The final results will support the development of tools, educational resources and policies designed to facilitate implementation of recommendations included in IDF’s global report on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease. A primary goal of the recommendations is to reduce the burden of CVD among people living with type 2 diabetes.
The survey will remain open until March 2018, and we encourage anyone living with type 2 diabetes to participate at www.idf.org/takingdiabetes2heart/survey.
