Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have been on a protracted rise in Sri Lanka to become the leading cause of disability, morbidity and mortality in the country: ‘In 2012, 65%-75% of in-patient deaths were due to NCDs.’ Source: NCD Alliance Lanka Strategic Plan.
To drive the fight against NCDs, which includes cardiovascular disease (CVD), Sri Lanka has established NCD Alliances Lanka; a network of national NGOs and other organizations, including academic, scientific and professional associations, civil societies and committed individuals. This alliance will bring a new voice to the campaign for addressing NCD and CDV risk factors, effectively promoting good health and improving the lives of people living with, and at risk of developing, NCDs.
NCD Alliance Lanka will tackle four key strategic dimensions – advocacy, accountability, capacity development and knowledge exchange – to address the rise in diabetes, heart disease and chronic chest Cancer in Sri Lanka.
