Candidate for Members at Large, from Foundations

Amitava Banerjee

United Kingdom

Statement of motivation

I am Professor Amitava Banerjee and delighted to stand for a WHF Member At Large position. I was a WHF Emerging Leader in the founding cohort in 2014 and have been Senior Advisor to the programme since 2018, leading its design and delivery. I have also been involved in WHF through the Science Committee and contributed to various other WHF activities, including publications and reports. I am well-aligned with WHF’s mission, whether in my academic or clinical roles.

I am a Tenured Professor of Clinical Data Science at University College London, and a Consultant Cardiologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust and Barts Health NHS Trust. I have an internationally recognised research portfolio in clinical data science, epidemiology, digital technology evaluation, cardiovascular and non-communicable diseases and global health with an H-index of 79, a combined grant income of nearly £40 million to-date (£8.9 million as principal, and £31 million as co-investigator) and over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

My work and my outlook are:

Relevant to clinical practice and policy

Through my funded research, networks and non-research roles, and clinical cardiology practice, I am driven by patient need and potential application for health and healthcare.

Data-driven

I believe that global networks can combine the best people, places and projects to support the use of routine data to strengthen knowledge and care across heart diseases.

Patient-centred

Both my perspective as a clinician and my active patient and public involvement experience, have reinforced my commitment to having a diverse and representative patient voice in my ongoing work.

Forward-looking

My team has led exciting work in AI and data science which represent new opportunities for improving heart health globally.

Inclusive and diverse

I am currently principal investigator in three large grants, and co-investigator in four major national and international grants from various funders (including NIHR, NIH and the European Union), with a commitment to team science and supporting early-career academics, clinicians and patients. In my work, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts only by crossing disciplines, methods, specialties, sectors and data.

Evidence-led

I am involved in several international partnerships, from global genomics consortia and electronic health record phenotyping guidelines to developing clinical informatics competencies and global health collaborations in multimorbidity and migration. I have been involved in national, European and American guideline development for atrial fibrillation, heart failure and Long COVID. My research has produced several international partnerships, including India, USA, Argentina and Kenya. I am an Advisor to the Global Burden of Disease Study.

Grounded in integrated care and research

I am committed to working with patients, healthcare providers and policymakers to advance health and healthcare through data and data-driven technology.

As a progressive clinician, a pragmatic researcher and a principled leader, I can contribute to strategies to enhance global heart health. I am uniquely placed to take advantage of the opportunities which this role offers to improve heart health.

Many thanks in advance for your consideration.
