"I used ♥ to: I Used My Heart to Spark Change and Empower Prevention "

This year, we celebrated World Heart Day 2024 with a holistic approach that spanned across multiple impactful programs. Each initiative was meticulously designed to emphasize the importance of prevention and to engage people from all walks of life in the fight against heart disease, the leading cause of death in Pakistan.

Achay Bachay: Primordial Prevention through Theatrical Drama
We kicked off the celebrations with Achay Bachay, a theatrical drama focused on primordial prevention, aimed at teaching children the importance of heart-healthy habits. This innovative program educates young minds about good eating habits, the dangers of smoking and tobacco use, the importance of physical activity, and reducing screen time. Starting with 20 schools, we aim to expand this initiative across Karachi, Sindh, and eventually the whole of Pakistan. This was a crucial step in tackling cardiovascular risks from a young age, hoping to create a generation that values preventive health.

Mega Health Camp for the General Population
For the first time, we organized a Mega Health Camp targeting the general public, offering free health checkups and educational resources. With 16 interactive health stalls, the event covered vital medical assessments such as cholesterol testing, blood pressure measurement, BMI, waist circumference, and blood sugar screening. The remaining stalls focused on nutrition, rehabilitation, infection control, pharmacy consultation, and general health advice. The goal was to empower individuals to take charge of their health and understand the key role prevention plays in avoiding heart disease.

Cardiometabolic CME for Healthcare Professionals
The third major initiative was a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on cardiometabolic diseases, focusing on the latest research and preventive strategies. Targeted at doctors and healthcare professionals, this session delved into the management of diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, all key contributors to cardiovascular disease. By equipping medical professionals with updated knowledge, we aim to combat the rising cardiometabolic disease burden in Pakistan.

Red Illumination of the NICVD Building
In collaboration with the government, we illuminated the NICVD building in red, symbolizing our united effort to raise awareness about the importance of cardiovascular health. This initiative, aligned with this year's World Heart Day theme, "Use Heart, Use Action," was a visual reminder of the urgent need to prevent heart disease through proactive measures. The red illumination stood as a beacon of hope and commitment to reducing the burden of cardiometabolic diseases across Pakistan.

Heart Beat Games for Healthcare Workers
Lastly, we organized the Heart Beat Games for our medical staff, nurses, and paramedics, providing a much-needed opportunity for relaxation, mental health support, and physical activity. This event included fun, engaging activities such as balloon volleyball, tambola, push-ups, and yoga sessions, all aimed at promoting mental well-being among healthcare workers, who are the cornerstone of any successful health institution. The event highlighted the importance of mental and physical health in the medical community.
