"I used ♥ to: Empower my community and save lives "
In commemoration of World Heart Day (WHD) 2024, the Indonesian Heart Association - Makassar or widely known as PERKI Makassar organized a series of impactful events aimed at empowering the community with vital knowledge and action to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Community Cardiac Workout and Life Support Training
Our event began with a cardiac workout session, engaging the surrounding community in an effort to promote physical fitness and heart health, motivating individuals of all fitness levels to participate. Additionally, we conducted a basic life support (BLS) training session, led by our team – which consists of cardiologist from PERKI Makassar members. Emphasizing that cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time and place.
Furthermore, our team outlined the symptoms of a heart attack and further discussed key risk factors to promote the prevention of this disease.
The BLS training covered crucial steps for non-medical responders in dealing with a suspected cardiac arrest, providing detailed instructions on the correct chest compression technique. The non-medical responders that attended were trained to effectively proceed effective CPR on mannequins in groups, simulating a code blue situation.
Mass Petition Signing for Global Heart Action
Our event also featured a mass petition signing in support of the World Heart Federation's ongoing efforts to push for a comprehensive heart action plan to combat cardiovascular disease—the world’s leading cause of death. Our community came together to gather 163 signatures, sending a powerful message to leaders that urgent action is needed to prevent cardiovascular disease and protect vulnerable populations.
A Continued Call for Heart Health Awareness
Our team made sure to voice the importance of community awareness in reducing cardiovascular mortality rates in Indonesia. By conducting events like these annually, PERKI Makassar hopes to foster a culture of proactive heart health management and empower more individuals with life-saving skills.
The success of this year’s World Heart Day activities highlights the impact of local community action in supporting a global cause. With over 163 individuals pledging their support, it’s clear that the call for a healthier future resonates deeply within the community. PERKI Makassar remains committed to its mission of promoting cardiovascular health and equipping people with the tools needed to save lives.
Let’s continue to use our hearts to take action!
