Motivation
It is with great enthusiasm and humility that I wish to apply for the position of Treasurer of the World Heart Federation (WHF) starting in January 2027.
My interest in the position originates from several formative experiences working directly with WHF over the past eight years. First was learning about WHF and its global mission to achieve “cardiovascular (CV) health for everyone” and its vision to translate science into policy. I was introduced to WHF’s mission and vision by Dr. Daniel Pineiro when we worked together as Trustees of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) from 2018 to 2021. The second experience was through a series of “bilateral meetings’ between WHF and ACC leadership on the sidelines of the ACC, AHA, and ESC annual meetings from 2022-2024 where we would collaborate to reduce CV burden and expand access to care. The third was conducting a joint program with the NCD Academy at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in 2022 identifying ways to reduce the impact of CV disease as the leading cause of non-communicable disease mortality. And, the fourth experience was in co-Chairing the 2023 World Congress of Cardiology with WHF at the ACC.23 Scientific Sessions focusing on global CV risk reduction and health equity.
In addition to these mission-related experiences, I have been active within WHF in developing the Audit Committee, its charter, and process improvement initiatives in support of selecting auditors and monitoring the external audit process. As part of my duties on the Audit Committee, I have worked closely with WHF finance staff, the Finance Committee, and Dr.
Richard Chazal, WHF Treasurer. This has provided me with a working knowledge of WHF’s operations, challenges, and opportunities to strengthen the fiscal position of the Federation.
I believe that my professional experiences as well as acquired leadership competencies position me well to succeed in this role. Within ACC, I have served as a Trustee, Chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee, ex officio member of the Finance Committee, and President of the College from 2022-2023. At Ascension Health, a large 120 hospital integrated health system in 11 states, I currently serve as the Chair of the National CV Service line with responsibility for clinical quality, safety, best practice, and operational performance across the system. This includes financial oversight, financial stewardship, reduction of cost of care, and revenue optimization.
If selected, I look forward to the privilege of working with WHF leadership and staff in fulfilling its mission by strengthening its financial operations, eliminating financial barriers, and optimizing its financial standing to be able to deliver on that mission.

Biography
Edward Fry was born in Dublin, Ireland, attended Grinnell College (Iowa), and medical school at Washington University, in St. Louis. Dr. Fry completed Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine, as well as a Cardiology Fellowship at Barnes Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine.
He completed a two-year Research Fellowship studying the biochemistry of native and genetically modified plasminogen activators with Dr. Burton Sobel. He remained on faculty at Washington University as Assistant Professor and Medical Director of the Cardiac Transplant Program. He completed a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Ascension/St. Vincent Health, Indianapolis, under the mentorship of Dr. Cass Pinkerton. He joined the cardiology practice at (Ascension) St. Vincent in 1991 and has remained there since. Dr. Fry currently serves as Chair of the Ascension National CV Service Line (2015-present). He helped launch and previously served as Board Chair of Navion Health Care Solutions, LLC (2005-2010); a data quality management software company now owned by Ascension.
Currently, he is a Past President of the American College of Cardiology (ACC, President 2022-2023). Dr. Fry is past President and Governor of the IN Chapter of the ACC; has served on the ACC Board of Trustees (2018-2024); Board of Managers of MedAxiom (2019-2022); Audit and Compliance Committee (Chair), Digital Strategy Steering Committee; Interventional Section Leadership Council; Surviving Acute MI Work Group; Integrating the Health Enterprise (IHE) Health Policy Work Group; Clinical Quality Committee; ACC COVID-19 Hub; BOG Steering Committee; Innovations Development Work Group; Clinician Well-being Task Force; Health Systems Task Force; ACC/AHA Ethics and Professionalism Consensus Task Force, and ACC Nominating Committee (Chair).
Currently, Dr. Fry serves as Co-Chair of the ACC Task Force on Comprehensive CV Prevention, Co-Chair of the Fuster Prevention Forum, and Chair of the domestic and International ACC Industry Advisory Forum. He is a board member of the American Board of Cardiovascular Medicine (ABCVM) as well as Chair of the World Heart Federation Audit Committee (2024-present). Dr. Fry is a key clinical faculty member for the Ascension Indiana Cardiology Fellowship Training Program and Marian University School of Medicine. He has been a presenter, moderator, and session chair at multiple national and international meetings. He has published over 60 manuscripts. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Ireland. Dr. Fry and his wife Kathy have three adult sons and live in Indianapolis.
